Today all of those things are very important. We want the churches we attend to “put their money where their mouth is” when establishing a quality children’s ministry department. But are those the most important things to look for if you are truly concerned about the spiritual growth and development of your children? What does a spiritually vibrant and healthy children’s ministry look like?

To answer those questions, it’s important to know what you want your children to look like spiritually. Most parents equate good behavior with spiritual fruit. While there is a connection, of course, is there something more? We want our children to hunger for the things of God. Mere entertainment will not satisfy that hunger. Good creatively told Bible stories will not satisfy that spiritual hunger. Our children were created with a deep hunger to encounter the supernatural living God. The best children’s ministries are those who go beyond the basic Bible stories and teach our kids the deep truths of God’s word, but also make sure there are ample opportunities to experience the presence of God through worship, prayer, quiet times, praying for the sick, listening for God’s voice, and similar activities.
